Why Toronto laterals fail

In neighbourhoods such as the Beaches, Leaside, East York, Etobicoke and much of the old city, sewer laterals were laid in vitrified clay with a joint every metre or so, and in some houses in cast iron from the foundation wall out. Both materials perform for decades and then fail predictably: clay at the joints, cast iron through corrosion and scaling.
